Elementary has Book-It; high school has the Gateway Luncheon! Students who read 3 or more Missouri Gateway Award nominee books this school year celebrated their accomplishment and voted for their favorite on Friday, March 7th, during their lunch period. They enjoyed pizza, desserts, and drinks as they discussed which of the Gateways is most deserving of the award. Each year, the Missouri Association of School Librarians (MASL) and a committee of teens from across the state of Missouri select the Top 15 books. Then students in Missouri high schools are encouraged to read as many of the 15 books as possible throughout the school year. In March, students who have read 3 or more of the books vote on which author should receive the Missouri Gateway Award, a state award that is very meaningful to authors, as it is voted on by their intended audience: teens. This year, Mrs. Lile, English teacher at Archie, had 17 students who were able to attend the luncheon and vote, several more than last year. She will post the results of the voting next week so students can see the winning book for Archie High School. She will also send the votes in to MASL and await the state voting results to be released in April, which she will also communicate to the students. All in all, it was a great day to be a Gateway reader!
